What is the best thing about having your grandchildren visit? They bring their parents along for the ride! This Covid Halloween was different because not all of my adult children were able to come to trick or treat together. Fortunately, my two daughters live close enough and they and their husbands have been pretty good about social distancing, so the four of them and their two children were able to join my son Michael and I for dinner. It was such a thrill to see my grandson, Michael and granddaughter, Eliana, so happy to visit and go out in the neighborhood to experience Halloween. Michael is four and not a big fan of costumes so he went around as himself. Eliana, almost 1, borrowed Michael’s first costume, a cute one from Monsters, Inc. Uncle Mike went out with his two sisters and brothers-in-law as the official photographer of the event.
I was expecting a smaller turnout this year because of Covid, but was pleasantly surprised that a record number of trick or treaters arrived looking for candy. The costumes were very varied, but the most unique one I saw was a young boy who showed up as a slice of pepperoni pizza. There were princesses, ghouls, hockey players, zombies, Chucky’s, just to name a few. It was nice seeing kids wearing different kinds of masks, other than the Covid masks they have been forced to wear. I was happy for the normalcy of Halloween this year!
When everyone returned from going a few blocks around the neighborhood, the partying continued. I heard about how excited Michael was going out and since this was Eliana’s first Halloween her parents enjoyed it, too! The two grandchildren watched Octonauts and enjoyed Creature Report. They each had a Popsicle and Halloween 2020 came to a happy end!
