Enough Already!!

It’s been eight months and I am beginning to get Covid fatigue. November is a very special month to me, not only is there the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, but I am especially grateful for the birthdays of three of my beautiful granddaughters! This year, I will have to forgo spending time with Ariana, (Nov.14), Hannah, (Nov.16), and Eliana, (Nov. 18). Ariana is now 5 years old, the oldest of my five grandchildren. Hannah turns 3 , and Eliana will be 1.

Normally, the whole family, my six children, their spouses and my grandchildren all get together to celebrate these birthdays. Unfortunately there is nothing normal about this year due to the unexpected arrival of Covid 19. Even though we can’t get together for the girls’ birthdays and Thanksgiving this year, we can be thankful for the gift of their lives and hopeful that by next November we will be back to the joy of family celebration.

The gift of grandchildren is a gift that keeps on giving. Grandparents get to appreciate the unique personalities of each grandchild and (up until this year) to thrill at what they say and do. There is nothing like a visit from a grandchild to lighten up your day! Part nostalgia from your children’s’ past and part projection into the future, grandchildren have an uncanny knack of being quite entertaining. While certain traits of theirs can be seen as genetic, they are always morphing into someone new. It is fascinating to spend time with them and love them with the love once exclusive to their parents.

Right now, seeing them on the cell phone will have to do as a way of keeping in contact with them. I am hopeful and looking forward to the time when we can feel safe enough to resume our in-person visits. Until then dear grandchildren, know that Mom Mom loves you so much and give your parents a hug from me!
