Happy Birthdays, Happy Mother’s Day

On Saturday, May 7th, the Lee family had the pleasure of celebrating Katie and Marianne’s birthdays. It was a very special event, because the whole family was able to gather and sing to their two sisters, two sisters in laws, two aunts and my beautiful two daughters. Despite the thirty plus years that has gone by, I remember when they were born and joined the Lee family. Both the girls were born a day and five years apart, and were welcome additions to their three and eventually four brothers. Their Dad and I were so blessed to hold them in our arms and watch them grow into the special women they have become.

As I think back on their young lives, memories flood my mind of days that were idyllic and days that were more ordinary. I am amazed at all the changes that have happened in their lives, and I am proud of all they have accomplished. There were challenges along the way but they met them with remarkable resilience and continue to do so. My fervent prayer for them is that they will always see their glasses as half full, not half empty and pass on the love they have in their hearts.

We all got together that day and when the Lees” get together it is quite a party! This year Marianne’s birthday actually fell on Mother’s Day, so it was a double celebration. There were ten adults and 6 grandchildren in attendance, and unfortunately due to rainy weather, we had to stay in the house. The adults sat at the kitchen table immersed in conversation, while the grandchildren raced around the house upstairs and downstairs to play and have fun. Uncle Mike bought some clay, so the nieces and nephews got creative on the dining room table. I took the grandchildren down to the basement, where they found some toys to play with. At one point they went to the second floor, looking for more fun.

Then we all settled down for dinner and to sing Happy Birthday to Katie and Marianne. The young cousins had a lot of fun, and hopefully their parents did too. I treasure these visits from my adult children and like eavesdropping on their conversations. The best Mother’s Day present to me is to see the camaraderie between my sons and daughters and their significant others and their children. I thank God for the blessing of my children and grandchildren!
