It is always a special pleasure to celebrate my adult children’s birthdays. On Tuesday, May 31st, it was time to celebrate my youngest son Stephen’s 27th birthday. I drove up to Bethesda with Michael, Katie and her daughter, Ellie to meet Stephen, Elisabeth, his girlfriend, and his older brother Tom to take Stephen out for dinner. We had a very nice dinner at an Indian restaurant. Afterwards, we sang “Happy Birthday” to Stephen at a picnic table that was out on Bethesda Avenue closed to car traffic. I had baked a one layer carrot cake, but unfortunately had not brought any plates or forks, thinking we could share the cake in the restaurant. I don’t think Stephen minded, since he got to bring the whole cake back to his apartment.
On Sunday, June 5th, it was my oldest son, John’s 41st birthday. This time my daughter, Marianne and her son, Michael accompanied me on the ride to Ijamsville to celebrate with John, his wife Georgette and his two daughters, Nora and Hannah. It was a fun day as Michael enjoyed rolling down the hills in the backyard and running through the sprinklers with his two cousins. In fact, Michael had such a good time that he didn’t want to leave. Spending time with John and his family is always a good time. Another birthday, another carrot cake as John also likes carrot cake. This one was a 9 x 13″ cake enough for his family.
Finally, on June 10th we all came together to celebrate my daughter Katie and son-in-law Dan’s baby boy Thomas’ first birthday. His birthday is actually June 2nd, but because it was held at a local park, June 10th was the first date available. It was made more special since all my adult children and grandchildren were able to get together. The party was held at Gilbert Run Park, a beautiful park with a lake, playground, bridge, picnic tables and grills. All the cousins and friends from the daycare had a great time playing at the playground, feeding the ducks, crossing the bridge and riding on a zip line. Thomas seemed to enjoy the outing, smiling at all the attendees. Katie had made some very cute decorations for the baseball themed party and she and Dan were very good hosts.
I feel blessed to be able to share these special times with my adult children and their children. Thank you, God, for the gift of family.
